Electric car costs in Georgia

Battery Capacity

Mitsibishi MiEV - 16 KWh (62 mile range, but lets say we'll limit it 50 mile trips to avoid range anxiety)
Nissan Leaf - 24 KWh (75 mile range, lets limit this to 60 mile trips)

Cost of Power by Georgia Power

  • Super Off Peak Power for EVs: 1.3 cents per KWh between 11 PM and 7 AM (8 hours is sufficient to fully charge)
  • Off Peak: 7 AM to 11 AM and 7 PM to 11 PM. 6.1 cents per KWh
  • Peak: 20.3 cents from 2 PM to 7 PM (June to September, Summer months). I guess because of high AC usage at this time.
  • Plan administration cost for Super Off Peak Power - $9/month

Cost to charge

  • Fully charge MiEV - 18.4 - 19.2KWh (assuming 15 - 20% charging losses). Cost to charge: 24 - 25 cents
  • Fully charge Leaf - 27.6 - 28.8KWh (assuming 15 - 20% charging losses). Cost to charge: 36 - 37.5 cents

Yearly total costs

  • Extreme usage, drive MiEV for 50 miles every day. 1500 miles per month, 18000 miles per year. $72 per year or $6/month.
  • Extreme usage, drive Leaf for 50 miles every day. 1500 miles per month, 18000 miles per year. $86 per year or $7/month.
  • MiEV Normal car usage, 12000 miles per year. $48 per year or $4/month.
  • Leaf Normal car usage, 12000 miles per year. $58 per year or $5/month.
  • I am not including the Plan administration cost of $9/month. This cost will be easily paid for by doing your laundry at the same time.

Notes

  • Georgia Super Off Peak power plan, once enrolled is a contract with the rate in place for 12 months.
  • Minimum Monthly Bill includes a few other things: $9.00 Basic Service Charge plus Environmental Compliance Cost Recovery, plus Nuclear Construction Cost Recovery, plus Demand Side Management Residential Schedule, plus Municipal Franchise Fee.
  • If your company offers free charging stations, cut your total bill by half.
